Our IC-tester was able to detect the faultiness of six LOGICAL GATES -->or, nor, and, nand, x-or and x-nor ..we did this with help of decoder, flip-flop N X-OR ....but our project supervisor instructed us , our project must also detect which IC is it ?? ....

so plzz if u can help me with this project without using micro-controller will be highly appreciable[/b]

The way most IC 'identifier' systems work is to isolate voltage from all the pins but one then measure the voltage on all the others. The pin with the voltage on it is changed, one pin at a time until all the pins have been checked. The idea is that logic gates normally have static protection diodes on them and will return almost identical voltages on the ground and supply pins. When these have been found, it is safe to put logic levels on the other pins to see how the device reacts. The results have to be compared with a table to identify the device family. It is not possible to distinguish between minor variations of devices. For example you would not be able to tell the difference between a 7406 and 7407 as the only different parameter is their rated voltage but you would be able to tell if it was one of the two.
