dc switches

Hello-
I've recently been told that a DC switch (not a relay type switch, just on-off) has an arc, while an AC switch does not.

Also- when designing with a DC relay, a diode is placed across the coil for what reason?...and when designing with an AC relay, a capacitor-resistor circuit is placed across the coil ...to limit current spiking?...

Can anyone explain further?
Thanks!
Nora

dc characteristic

sparking is either with ac or dc but maybe not ac if yuou switch at zero crossing
