CSMA CD algorithm in Ethernet???

csma cd algorithm

hi all,
i hav a doubt regarding csma cd algorithm ( carrier sense multiple access with collision detection)
as my mtech project,, i'm writing a device driver for NIC in vxworks...
i read in books that ethernet uses CSMA CD algorithm for transmission and reception of packets through network, but i could not make out one thing, i.e., whether the CSMA CD algoritm already resides inside the network interface card (NIC) or we should write that code (CSMA CD algorithm) in our driver program??

pls help me.
