Can I build a Sensor Network with Zigbee?

I have a research about Sensor Network and want to build a small system for practice.
I want to know how i can use Zigbee for this network?
The purpose of my system is control all smart devices in the house with range <100m
and use Zigbee for communication.
Do you have any sugestion?
Please tell me know if you have any ideas or documents, ...
