I have this device, not meant to be a programmer, that could program atmel's at90s2313. If this device could program at90s2313, could it program other chips of with the same #pins and package?

programmer question

David,

the answer is "it depends" on so many things. The number of pins is one thing you have to look at, more important is the pin assignement, which pin needs to be stimulated with what kind of pattern.
Example, a 40-pin device could be programmed with just 2 pins, one is a clock, the other data. Or it could be programmed with 36 pins, 3 status pins, 1 clock pin, 32 data pins. That can be the same package but the algorithm would be very different.
So, if the programmer is very flexible and each pin can be programmed seperately it can also program other chips that fit in the same socket but the changes in the software that runs on the programmer are big.
If you need a programmer that is able to program different devices, I would recommend to buy one, if you are building one that fits just one device, this is doeable.

Cheers, Bob
