c++: interface with hardware using parallel, serial or usb port

Hello I am required to make a simple program to interface hardware with one of the mentioned ports using c++.
I have decided to use a 7 segment display and display numbers that are inputted from 0 to 9.
I have not done a program like this before so if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction to get started off on how to do this then it would be really appreciated.

hi u can do this by using pc parraller port and it can be easily done.
