building a one shot monostable circuit

Hi Guys
I'm very new to the world of designing circuits, but I'm very interested in it.
I got a few questions, I'm currently building a mono-stable circuit using a momentary switch.
The idea is to allow the circuit to turn on and off, but when its on, it will last 10 seconds and auto shutoff.
I feel like i'm missing something here for it to be able to do that.
If I can get some guidance it would be much appreciated.
 

There are digital monostable multivibrators (74xx123) and
there are linears (LM555 and derivatives, including CMOS).
Use your pushbutton to trigger these and let them (with
their timing passive components) do the rest, unless this
is a voyage of discovery.

Of course you could have the button charge a capacitor,
let a parallel properly sized resistor bleed it back, and a
sense transistor or gate to make the end-of-period
decision. That's simple and maybe a penny or two cheaper
than the IC solution, although likely less repeatable.
