2. Robot Builder's Cookbook: Build and Design Your own Robots by Owen Bishop

hi, if you want to started with designing robot you should study how you use microcontroller, control motor using PWM,....u can start by design a simple circuit to control dirrection of DC motor,... after all you read book writing about robot.
