Atmega64 interface Sim900

I had implemented Atmega64 with Sim900 on a Board. i used from USART1 for communication between them. i could send sms from my board to any cell phone. now i want to receive SMS. i tried so much, but it does not work. how do i act? which function do i use for recieving sms from USART1 port of Atmega64?(scanf() or gets() or getchar())

you can connect the sim900 to PC & communicate with AT commands. then you communicate with controller.
