Asynchronous 8 bit microcontroller implementation

I was hoping to do a project on the fpga implementation of an 8 bit asynchronous microcontroller, using a handshaking protocol.
Could anyone please shed some light on this topic?

I plan to use either vhdl or verilog coding language.
