The DC servo uses a drive that generates DC voltage.
The AC servo needs a drive that generates an variable amplitude and freq. AC that is in phase sync with the rotor angular position. Every AC servo has some sort of angular position sensor: hall-effect switches, encoders or resolvers.
A DC servo has magnets in the stator and the AC servo has magnets in the rotor.
