The opencores uart, if i remember correctly, has a bug related to the stop bit detection. So to use theirs you will have to check the code to make sure it works. The opencores one is also not a 550 compatable UART as it requires a clock at all times at a specific speed, or atleast isn't valid to DC. There is also some issues with the clock domain synchronization in the fifos.. releated the the fifo full/empty conditions.. but most 550 designs have that same issue.
