I came to know that transformer used in SMPS power supply is ferrite core. How to design transformer for given specification. Is there any mathematical derivation for this. If you have can you provide me. I am very much interested in SMPS supply.
If you visit the link
www.powerint.com U will acces to almost all the info U need.
If any doubt appear then ask here.
For downloading their SMPS design tool U must register, try it, is FREE.
Regarding the ferrite material, yes it is used for the core of the inductors, as this material has less loses that laminated SiFe. When working at higher frequency, the inductor size comes smaller. If U make a design with power integration IC´s the switching freq will be from abt 72 Khz to 132 Khz.
Of course the are converters working in the MHz range, in such case the inductors comes very small but suggest U start with fs abt 100 KHz.
Regardin PI Designer, you start selecting de device, later you enter de input & output parameter and voila, the program will bring you almos all the info U need to start the construction of your SMPS. You shall need to pay special attention to the PCB layout, forget of using protoboard like modules. At PI site you´ll be able to find board layouts references too. Do not forget the other site I´ve mentioned, TI, NS, ST Fairchild, IR, Infineon, LINEAR. In those sites you will be able to get tons of info. If looking for further literature, search EDABOARD book downloads, here u will soprprice for the quantity of books available.
Hope to be of help for U.
Best Regards.
