I am trying to build a remote control application having Tx and Rx capability between the remote and a device. I am using the ATMega128RFA1 chip from Atmel. They have a reference design which includes a surface mounted antenna. My problem is that I want a micro patch antenna both for the remote and the appliance. I have no idea about antenna design and am therefore kind of stuck. My transmission requirement is very short distance, just 10 -12 feet so the antenna does not have to be super great I guess. I need the antenna to be very very small say .5 x .5 inch or upto 1 x 1 inch or something in that vicinity.

For your reference, the documents they have provided me as reference are

http://www.atmel.com/Images/doc8095.pdf
http://www.atmel.com/Images/doc8092.pdf
http://www.atmel.com/Images/STK600-ATMEGA128RFA1.pdf

Any pre-created/known etc design / help / pointers would be appreciated.
