I am wondering how to determine the 13.5 MHz RFID systems (antenna) operation range.

Since the 13.5MHz RFID are using near-field magnetic coupling instead of far-field radiation properties of antenna, how do we determine the maximum operation range instead of using traditional link budget in RF wireless?

The other question is that in this type of RFID systems, do we use transformer circuit model instead of radiation antenna model to analyze?

If yes, what kind of characteristics or parameters of this type of antennas are used to represent the systems performance, Mutual Coupling coefficient or some other terms?

Any informations or reference are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance~~

A general rule of thumb is that the range will be the lesser of the diameters of the reader coil or the tag coil if they are somewhat the same diameter. On extreme differences, the range will be the reader coil diameter.
