avr jpeg

hi all ,

i am going to use RS232 cam , i heard there is a cam with RS232 output , 5 frames per second ,
if i use bitmap , with 16 bits pixel depth , then 320*240*16 = 1,228,800 bps for each frame !!! , too much for
my data link so i want to connect it to an AVR MCU , then compress it and send through a data link , now i want to know which compression method is the best for this application and AVR also can decode and encode it .... ?,

is JPEG good for this application ?

i think 320*240 pixel is good for start .

Thanks and Best Regards.
