I want to know regarding thermal relief that whether we can set no of thermal spoke in any software. Mostly software use 4 spokes or two spokes default. But i want only one spoke in thermaled pad, comments from people using different softwares are welcome.

pcb thermal

I use Ultiboard and it gives me 5 or 6 options for the way thermal relief is to be applied. like X shaped, polygon shaped, +-, --, | shapes for the spokes

why use spokes in pcb

I use cadstar and get at min 2 spokes
If i am incorrect please correct me --any cadstar user

Re: Pcb Thermal relief

HI,
as i m new to pcb design and layout..can you clarify some doubts..

1.where/why do we use thermal relief pads.
2.do we use it for both thru-hole components as well as smd components
3.do we use thermal relief pads for both power as well as signal lines
4.do we use it for tracks as well as planes
5.what is tumbeffect

Pcb Thermal relief

hi ,

common reasons for using thermal relief
1.reflow soldering method should be used.
2.leaded components pads .(due to high amphs rating)

no need thermal relief for smd components.(upto 15v supply)

On the contrary there is, although you yourself may not have experienced it, there is good reasons for it on SMT components.
(Think thermal balancing).
