Is there a SMD Package naming rule ?

smd naming

What is the relation between the physical aspect of R or C element, and their name? For example what does mean 1208? I suggest it is 1.2mm by 0.8mm.

Any suggestion or comment?

I think that these are the body dimensions in 1/100 of an English inch. 1208 would be 0.12 by 0.08 inches.
