satellite unique

hi,
I would like to try some stuff on identifying satellites automatically.
I heard there is a unique ID for every satellite ( at least commercial) above us.
I think i will use a sat tuner from dead receiver
how can I get this satellite id with it ?
is there a way
or I'm doing wrong ?
must I store a table with known emitting frequancies from each satellite (and change it each time these frequencies changes..) and compare to the frequancies of the satellite I try to identify ?

thanks for replying.
