Maybe not new news but the article seems interesting regarding powering short-lived appliances and biodegradability, the supposed Utopia or Panopticon (depending on one's outlook) of IOT in this case:

Not sure if this 2006 thread is really closely-related but seems much of a muchness (the link in the thread appears to be dead):
The technology behind paper batteries
It would be great for e.g. general purpose 1.5V, or even better, car batteries to be made from this kind of technology. We generate so much rubbish that is not eco-friendly, I sometimes even feel "guilty" about a healthy hobby such as electronics (healthy depending on subject areas of interest, evidently)...
