This link is to a book called Image Processing in C by Dwayne Phillip it also has the source code provide in the book. This book explains everything from reading an image in a standard format (Tag Image File Foramt- TIF) then improving the image, sharpening the image etc. If you are just intersted in the way the images are stored then read the first three chapters.
