Intermediate User? well you have to specify for what Use?
If you need a Server then Go for Fedora,Ubuntu,RHEL,Debian etc...
If you need a small tiny nice looking desktop you can carry on your pendrive then please consider Austrumi, DSL,puppy or any Live distro.
If you are adventurous then you can start your own linux Too by using tools available like LFS, rockhardlinux etc...

Umm BSD??? BSD is a separate OS all together it is not Linux.

Oh great, Welcome to the community:smile:

tools:
1) GCC is Must you already said that.
2) Have a separate PC for your experiment.( Don't experiment on your Production PC)
3) BASH scripting
4) Python scripting
5) Perl scripting
6) Regex( regular expression)

These are the pre-requisites.
But it lot depends on what type of experiment you are going to do.

If you are interested for application level experiment then above are sufficient.
If you want Driver level experiment then please have some good books like **broken link removed** handy.
also please keep a rescue CD/USB for recovery.
If you want to experiment with hardware interfacing then Install Eagle Cad, with Electronics Group.

am I leaving out something? :-x

You need to define what you need/want...more than likely ANY Linux will work for you so use a couple and pick the one you like...
