Somethings about RSSI

Hi all,

RSSI - received signal strength indicator. Besides the function of strength indication, does it has other special applications?

Best regards

Mac

You can use RSSI to calculate other parameters.

Donj, Thx for your reply.

But what is the other paramemters ? Could you explain more detials.

As i m designing a receiver using Melexis Th71112, but i dunno the function of RSSI signal...

Best rgd

Re: Somethings about RSSI

RSSI can be used as a tool to give an indication of link quality, but not always give good results. The received signal level can also be affected by in-band interference sources. So, a strong signal level can be reported, but data can be corrupted. To compensate for this some systems use loopback data transfer in parallel with RSSI reading.
RSSI circuit can be used also as a log detector. For some circuits this log detector is very accurate, and the dynamic range can be up to 100dB.

RSSI says something about the received signal strength and can be used to control power level of the transmission (like "You can reduce your output power because I am close") and more recently some use RSSI as an indicator for position.
As vfone mentioned, RSSI is not completely reliable because it can be affected by obstructions, multipath and interferers.

Don :)
