Scope damaged due to connection to 230VAC mains?

Hello,
I lent my scope and probe to an intern, and when he gave it back it did not work.

If he connected the probe to Live and Neutral of the mains, would that have broken the scope and /or probe?

It is the HPS10 scope and the PROBE60S probe by Vellemann....
(i notice the scope manual, on the last page, says it is only for 200VAC....but does that mean that greater will break it?)

The probe will be ok but if it was set to 1:1 then mains voltage would probably blow up the oscilloscope. A 'normal' oscilloscope should withstand mains even with a x1 probe - my Yokogawa is rated at 400V.

If you want a replacement Velmann for the cost of the postage, send me a PM. I bought one a few years ago for a particular job where I needed something small, portable and battery operated and have never used it since.

As Keith wrote if the probe was set to 1:1 then mains voltage would probably blow up the oscilloscope.

From the data sheet you attached you can see 200V capacitors were used. If the unit turns on but does not measure it is likely bad caps. If it does not turn on at all it is hard to say what was damaged but it is nice they give you a part list and schematic making troubleshooting and repair easy.

I have seen the earth of the scope probe connected to the live of the mains!! It blew up the ground track on the scopes PCB and destroyed virtually every semiconductor in the scope. If the probe had been connected the right way around the chances are that no damage to the scope would have happened.
