I tested this tonight and with several watches in the window it still steps instantly... you might have a bug. This thing is fast!
I also tested it on my 18F8720 board tonight and it works perfectly :D
I do get that "The system cannot find the file specified." error sometimes after plugging...
Ok, I'll bite.
3 easy steps to ICD2 heaven:
1) Build the hardware shown at www.mcu.ez
2) Load the 877a firmware that's linked to early on in this thread.
3) Load Zedman's 18f4550 firmware that's linked to a couple pages ago.
DONE.

Good, that eliminates a couple parts then. Are you using the shared crystal just like the schematic shows? This thing could be very small with QFP devices and no serial port! :D
Interesting. How often does the 877 talk to the MCP41xxx to set the Vpp? Will an error show up in MPLAB if the MCP41 is omitted and a constant Vpp is used? I guess the logic will have to stay, though the schematic at mcu.cz does not have it. I can't interpret the page so can anybody tell me...

16f877 vpp voltage drop
I hooked up the 877a last night after I got the usb working and now when I try to download the OS it says that it's not an ICD2. I believe it read product ID 0x00 which was an ICD (1)? Does it sound like I'm just not getting data from the 877?
