If you see the circuit there is only 1 ground and if it disconnects no current can flow. I thought of this but cant see how a bad connection can cause any problem.

The zener was connected in series (reversed) so it drops 5V. Input is around 27V then 2 diodes in series...
They are connected to 24V signals through a voltage divider of 47k and 10k resistors- so the pic sees 5V. Seeing the the current is quite low I did not include any protection since the Pic inputs have internal protection diodes already.
The 5V zener was connected in-series before the 7805 so...
I have several of these working on 12V systems without any problems and I have 4 others working on 24V systems. Its only on a particular truck that this is happening.
The 78L05 is indeed close to its input voltage limit but there are 2 diodes in series lowering the voltage to less than 27V...

Why not try Picoscope? I find it very good and with much more memory. There is a new model with floating inputs which makes it ideal for such measurements.

Thanks but I would definitely not have the LOAD always connected to the HI side (even through R1) for safety reasons.
So a P mosfet on the high side is a must but I would still like to disconnect the LO side of the load too.
Ok my aim is to discharge the capacitor through the load. The lamp actually is a pyro igniter and I have several of them connected near each other - separate circuits of-course.

I have a capacitor (slowly charging) and need to discharge it to a floating load. I am currently using a double pole relay to do this but would like to convert the circuit to mosfets. I have attached the circuit but have some doubts that it would work properly.

I have tried 3 different parts with the same result. I have just bought them from Farnell - actual part number is MOC3083X.
Using a light bulb as a load the circuit works fine. I am using ACST830-8 Triac then a 470R resistor from OUT pin to opto then to Gate.
I am driving a Triac using the MOC3083. The triac is switching a Contactor 230Vac. When switching ON is ok but when switching Off the Contactor stays energized.
If the Opto is removed the Triac switches OFF so the problem seems leakage on the Opto triac.
If the MOC3083 is replaced by MOC3063...

The heating issue is only during charging which only lasts 2-3hrs. This should normally be done during the night but ofcourse the client can do what he wants.

@treez - Already have a Pic on the board so might add that temp sensor since its quite cheap and accurate enough for this application.
