16F716 replaces the whole family 16C71, and 16C71X devices. In fact it is the olny one reccommended by them for new designs.
Be carefull with register programming as not only the memory sizes are different but olso bits in registers - for instance the combinations of D/A on the analog port.

How do they detect flood in their proffesional equipment. Is it just using a probe of 2 electrodes and measuring the conductivity across them or is it more sophisticated?

What I do about the timer thing is:
I increment a counter at the main loop and check its value inside the timer isr. If counter does not increment correcly then I block refresh strobes to the external watch dog. This way, you still have control on the wdt even if...

You should look at the data sheets. I once did it and found one prameter about slower timyng in the 66 (it was minor thogh) but when tryed it it worked no prob.
Want to save the cost of the max.
Who has a schematic of a working circuit based on basic parts like transistors caps etc.
I used une of those in the passed and was happy with it.
