The inner walls of the hold that is drilled through the PCB is electro-plated with copper for electrical connectivity and conductivity. Hence the drill holes subjected to electroplating and which are mainly used for mounting and soldering the component pins, are known as PLATED (Since its electro-plated) THROUGH (since the drill hole runs through the pcb from top to bottom side) HOLE. Simple isnt it??
