Ok so i plugged my multi meeter into the well and it seams to have bowen the fuse to my house.

2 questions:
1. Why did this happen
2. how do i stop this happening again.

Thanks

Something is wrong. If you selected the meter to read a voltage higher than what you expected nothing should have happened.

It is possible that you had the meter set to read current or resistance.

If this is the case, your meter fuse has also opened. Open the case to your meter and examine the fuses.

namit, please ignore the contribution made by Jim Swanson. If he is serious then it is unsound advise. If he is kidding then it is a dangerous joke.

Check to see if any other damage is done, then replace all fuses with the appropriate type. Be sure that your multimeter's probes are in the common and DC/AC volts positions. I have also accidently left them in the wrong position when attempting to measure AC volts.

Flatulent and ldanielrosa are correct. Most likely your probes were accidentally plugged into the high-current connectors on your meter, or the meter was set to a high-current range instead of voltage. In that mode, the meter becomes a low-ohms resistor that short-circuits the AC mains and blows a fuse somewhere, usually inside the meter, but if the meter doesn't have a fuse on the high-current range, then it blows the fuse in the house's fuse box. It's a common mistake. Sometimes we poke fun at each other for doing it!

K thanks lads for the help it seams that i had the multimeter setup for amps and not Voltage when i was doing this.

Thanks again

Well i stuck it in another socket today and it seams to be ok.

Try measuring current, fuse might be burned, or something wors since >16A passed trough multimeter....

the house fuse was burnt out and think the power extender is also burnt out. Multimeter seams to be still alive.

you should still test the multimeter by putting a resistor in series with a voltage source and measuring the current.

Praise yourself lucky you still have hands...
Pretty dangerous not to check your settings on your multi-meter before sticking the probes into a receptacle...

It seems that someone disagrees with my motivations, among other things. A bit of email I received due to a misunderstanding of protocol on another forum called this thread into relevance for a dose of vitriol.

Hi,

Thanks for your useful response. It was nearly as
insightful as your post on edaboard's forum where you
stopped Namit from earning a well-deserved Darwin
award. You're such a great guy! You deserve a <obscenity removed>
medal, don't you? However, since I don't have a
<obscenity removed> medal, I'm going to give you an ipod instead.
Not just one ipod, I'm going to give you as many free
ipods, xboxes and PS3s as I can find. While I'm at it,
I'll sign you up for a bunch of magazine
subscriptions, too. I'll just remember to check the
"bill me later" box.

Cheers!
Kyle W. Johnson

If you have an opinion for me to hear about a thread, please keep it where it is relevant so that others can benefit from the criticism.
