It is "22 microfarad polarized capacitor." or so I am told

(this is for my friend)

I know microfarad is a cap measurement... but what does it mean for a cap to be polorized or not?

And, the reason I am asking this.. is because i need to find a replacement part.

Anyone know what to buy?

Will Ihave to have the exact measurements?

thanks

He also doens't know what voltage this cap is

(also.. this comes off a ATi Radeon 9700 videocard.)

Also.. the cap's 2 connectors were broken off.. I was thinking about repairing it. .but it probably wouldn't be as good as getting a new one :/

Re: Sorta OT.. I need to replace this cap.. but what kind is

Looking at the second pic its a 22uF cap. Most likely tantalum which is polarized. What that means is that if you install it backwards it will blow up. It can only handle voltage in a specific polarity.
The 20YZ should be the voltage and tolerance.
Since its in a Pc I doubt its higher than 20Volts. Tolerance is not particularly critical.
Go to a online parts distrubitor and order a few caps.
Look for Tantalum, surface mount, 22uF 20V 10%
Package size match is important. Voltage can be higher than 20 but not lower and value should be 22uF
Mouser.com or digikey.com are good sources for parts.
good luck

Wow!

thanks for all the info!

Re: Sorta OT.. I need to replace this cap.. but what kind is

Glad to help.
IF you have a way to measure the cap you can find its body size.
Most SMD parts are going by their maximun body size.
for example a 0805 is .080" x .050", 0603 .060x.030 etc.
Chances are that cap is a 3528 "B" (3.5mm x 2.8mm) or a 6032 "C" (6.0mmx3.2mm)

Why tantalum caps are in metric and other smt parts in inches beats the hell out of me.

You might even be able to get a sample or two if you're a good talker. :)
Good luck
