Problem when program CKSEL bits of Atmega8515 by Ponyprog

When I use Ponyprog to program Atmega8515, there are some problem with me:
- I used "AVR ISP (STK200/300) parallel port interface", but without the diode at Vcc. I could program the device even when forgot to power on the board (I have checked working of device after programed).
- When I push Write button to program CKSELn bits from 0001 to 0100, suddenly Ponyprog program indicated "Device missing". I checked Lancos forum, there are some people like me.

Could you tell me what is happening?
And how can I program my ATmega8515?

I have used the programmer for AT89S52 (**broken link removed**) and software in CodeVisionAVR. It was OK.
