Microcontroller ATMEL to be use in two port equipment

Hi people,

can somebody help me. how to program at ATMEL, and what ATMEL IC to use to control to output port equipment tends to measure resistance (interconnect) at many points.

What kind of output port equipment you wish to interface with Microcontroller
How does it communicates with the Microcontroller either Parallel (how many bits) or Serial (RS232, SPI, I2c...)
Would you please elloborate little more, so that it will be easy to help you...
