logic for TM condition on solving fields

Hello,I am having problem with solution shown bellow.
TM means Hz=0,but why d/dz=0?why do we need this assumption?

d/dz of what = 0?
I guess the text is referring to all the other field components, i.e., they are assuming the fields are uniform in the z-direction inside the cavity. This would end up limiting the problem to a 2D domain, which greatly simplifies things.
