Samrt antenna is an adaptive antenna array controlled by a DSP.The word smart comes from the adaptiveness of the antenna, due to its variable capacity with the help of DSP. For example its directivity, sidelobes etc are continuously monitored and varied as per the requirement. This property helps a lot in mitigating Multipath fading, intersymbol interferrence, cochannel interference etc.. that are inherrent in wireless communication.
Smart antennas are used in base stations and wireless lan terminals.
