Steeper motor works in continuously mode
It is possible to switch stepper motor from hard disk drive into continuously mode, so you can use it for clock, LED pov,
Firstly pay attention that stepper motor is not responsible for spinning the disk! Stepper is that who moves the head! Please remember that only recent drives works without stepper motor. But you also can use engines from old 5-1/4 inch floppy drives – works fine and you can easy adjust them and are very precisious.
First of all you need to create a driver. To get that search the part number of your hard drive. It should be close to stepper motor, and then build a driver. Stepper requires four drive transistors with right sequence.
To reach high rpm you can’t make a kick start. You need to start at the lowest speed and slowly increase by potentiometer.
Pay attention that for spin motors ( propeller etc) this is to slow. Typical DC motor is better for that.
Example of ready circuit you can find below. Offcourse it’s a stepper motor controller. Target was to reach 2400 RPM that is maximum that can be get from this sircuit. Power supply was 3A so maximum voltage was 5V. you should be able to put 3 spare inverters to vary the pulse. Current consumtion il really low.
