I recently attended a workshop on ‘Robotics with Arduino’. The kit contained a development board which had Atmega8 microcontroller in it. The name written on the board was ARKduino. I was told to use Arduino software for uploading the code into the development board. My doubt is that how can we program Atmel microcontroller using Arduino software instead of AVR Studio software.

If you read the wikipedia entry for arduino you soon come to the conclusion that there
is no such thing as an arduino.
You are just dealing with a sbc the same as any other sbc.
Just ignore the term and do what you want to do would be my advice.
There doesnt appear to be anything to be "compatible" with as far as I can tell.

Do please correct me if I'm wrong.
