If 12" is big enough for you, KWALITY PHOTONICS PVT. LTD in India manufactures and sells separate LED segments to build 12" 7-segment displays:

do you have any schematic on how to wire those LEDs? How about the mathematics behind on how to determine to size of big 7-segments with respect to viewing distance?
