Hi
want to pursue a career in vlsi design and verification; am an absolute beginner and need info/help/guidance on what are the professional/industry streams in the area of vlsi. also if someone could let me know from where to get freeware/opensource tools and how to go about becoming a vlsi design engineer

Thanks
kt

Well...if u r really serious about VLSI ...go for a MAsters in VLSI or MicroElectronics..

Short Term Courses are not good enough....

You can go for either front end or back end......both are hot....it depends on your interests...

But one thing is sure...VLSI is exciting and lucrative career.

Added after 40 seconds:

There are many websites for VLSI tools .....just GOOOOOGLE !!!

i advice u with the same thing...u should get into a masters or diploma program
it won't be useful to start on your own
u must have some sort of guidance and scheduling for the subjects and syllabus

most tools in VLSI aren't free, so the place u will study in will provide u with them

u can start reading general readings to know what u want to specialize in: front end or back end....

u can go into design...verification...synthesis....testability....manufacturability....lots of stuff

good luck,
Salma:D

Depending on your education background, if you know much about device physics, analog is a good and popular field to enter now; however, if you know only digital logic and have basic programming skills, you can take digital design and verification for choice.

Regards,
RP,

U can join some institutes teaching vlsi design courses like cdac etc in INDIA.And one thing decide beforehand what ur interest is analog or digital .Take further steps accordingly depending on ur choice.

I also suggest it depends upon your educational background. It's better to go for masters in Microelectronics/VLSI design. Some institutes also offers courses on 6 months also.

You can go either in front end where you will be more concerned about the functionality of a chip. You either do design or verification it for it's correctness.
You can choose back end field where actual physical implementation of chip occurs.

Since VLSI tools are costly they are not easily available on net. Whatever are available has very limited features in it.

hey can u suggest few basic books 2 b fallowed n some related websites for front end part of VLSI course

well i think .......some experts need 2 reply ....
ypnayak ..u had enough of collection man

For learning front end design in analog start with book by sedra smith to learn fundamentals about MOS and then graduate to books by holberg, razavi , baker etc. to learn design on device level.

can refer books by alen holberg and razavi for analog design
