basic microcontroller

hey frds,
i am a newbie in the field of microcontrollers..i wud like to work with them but i hv no background abt them.i wud like to knw the difference between microprocessor and microcontroller. i will be very grateful if smone guides me to some good basic ebook which will explain the basic architecture, program codes and compilers to use related to microcontrollers.
i wud also like to buy one microcontroller but there are so many of them in the market that i don't knw which one to buy.i wud like ur opinion, which one shud i buy.
