I am building a RF signal strength meter using AD8313. Do I need to use SMT components in my circuit? Can I use through hole components instead?

The decoupling for the log amp should probably be SMT (and right next to the log amp, 0603 or smaller I would suggest), as should the terminating resistor.

Do use a ground plane (Log amps tend to oscillate if you look at them funny, and often oscillate in the absence of input to at least some extent no matter what you do).

Regards, Dan.
