I want to test the loss of transmission line (coaxial cable or twisted pair cable), any advice?
thanks.

General answer is: Use a network analyzer. If unavailable, measurements could be taken by other equipment, but dependant on the frequency region of interest and required accuray. By the way: attenuation for standard cables is specified by manufacturer.

thank you for your method.
I want know the cable loss along freq from low to high, the manufacturer just provied the loss at one spicyfied freq. So I have to measure it.

Hello,

most cable manufacturers give tables of cable losses, may be more or less detailed. I append a Huhner&Suhner RG58 datasheet as an example. So I think, for knowing nominal attenuation, it's typical not necessary to perform measurements. Furthermore, the attenuation has a very regular frequency characteristic, resulting basically from skin effect √f proportional resistance. (Diagram also for RG58)
