What is the use of JTAG in Embeded system developement kit?

JTAG

its for debugging the software for embedded microcontrollers,thus reduces the need for incircuit emulators.It can also be used for dowloading the codes into the controller.

jtag is onboard debugging protocol
which include few signals :
TDI , TDO , RESET, ...........
you can connect few components in a daisy chain and program it all once...
usually it comes in some circuitry called "ICE"
in circuit emulator...
there is also ISP , in system programming...
for more details search in the board for JTAG
