Vehicle tracking system

Hi,
I want to design a vehicle tracking system using GSM. This is to estimate the approximate location of the vehicle. The transmitter in the vehicle should collect the nearby tower (mobile phone tower) location and transmit it. I am planning to use 89c51. kindly advice

thanks in advance

This design from circuit cellar design contest maybe help You, or can be a start point of Your application!

thanks jerin for help but i m looking for vehicle tracking using phone tower(mobile towers) not using GPS.so plz giv me so advice on this.

So i think when you go to locate the vehicle with mobile towers then you would also try to learn CDMA concepts which would be very useful in future of project.

when i am moving with my mobile my mobile screen displays where I am atleast it tells me which area.. we can use this info to get location..
are you looking for this or you are looking for methods like triangulations using signals of multiple tower

Thats a nice suggestion. But if there is no mobile tower in the locality of the phone, how do you think you can tackle it?

I didn't get the answer for my question posted above mate. :-(

its right choice by using satellite signals in deep forest area and other than else....

The area information what we get in GSM modem is a very long data that cannot be decoded by us. and the cell/ tower id is not shared by the operators to its user. I tried that and the service providers told nobody will share that data base information to customers. we need to pay huge bucks to purchase the information which i found was not worth. Based on the data base information the cell phone updates the place name from the tower from which signal it gets more signal strength. There is no alternative to find the cell ID information.
1. Option is change the SIM of different operators and read the AT command for getting the tower info. See the response from the datasheet and see which parameters are matching from all the different sim cards. Take modem to various places and do the exercise,
write a own database in your program with those variables you found..........................

then how our mobile is showing the area if its very long. i think tower directly tell us its area location..

AT+CCED command is used by the application to retrieve the parameters of the main cell and of up to six neighbouring cells.
There are two possible methods for the external application to ascertain these cell parameters: on request by the application or automatically by the product every 5 seconds.
Automatic mode is not supported during registration.
Syntax:
Command syntax: AT+CCED=<mode>[, <requested dump>]
Defined values:
<mode>
0: One shot requested
1: Automatic shots requested
2: Stop automatic shots
<requested dump>
1: Main Cell : if the Cell Identity is available MCC, MNC, LAC, CI, BSIC, BCCH Freq
(absolute), RxLev, RxLev Full, RxLev Sub, RxQual, RxQual Full, RxQual Sub,Idle TS
if the Cell Identity is not available MCC, MNC, LAC, BSIC, BCCH Freq (absolute), RxLev,
RxLev Full, RxLev Sub, RxQual, RxQual Full, RxQual Sub,Idle TS
2: Neighbour1 to Neighbour6 : if the Cell Identity is available MCC, MNC, LAC, CI, BSIC,
BCCH Freq (absolute), RxLev if the Cell Identity is not available MCC, MNC, LAC,, BSIC,
BCCH Freq (absolute), RxLev
4: Timing Advance
Combination (addition of the values) of the requested dump is supported.
Note that in idle mode, only RxLev measurements (on the main cell and on the
neighbouring cells) are made. The value of these RxLev is set in the RxLev Full field for the
main cell.
The response will be:
+CCED :<value>, … , <value>
OK
Where <value> is the ASCII string of the values (in decimal form except the LAC and CI
values which are in hexadecimal form) of the parameters. If a field cannot be measured –
or has no sense – the parameter is not filled in (two consecutive commas are then found).
If the <requested dump> parameter is absent, that of the last +CCED command (or 15 by
default) will be used.
Values of MCC/MNC are set to 0 in the case of “No service”.

if anyone can decode this message please let me know.. i tried this 6 years back and might have tried for 2 to 3 years but still could not decode properly. When consulted my friend in bharati telesonics he explained me the fact, but still it is hidden from me.
I will be thankful to anyone who comes out with a solution.

Sometimes when the modem does not get signal it does not show any information, you can take it to no service zone, the cell info will not come.

In that condition it is reliable to use GPS rather than GSM for locating the phone rite?

Even in GPS you have to map the geogrophical data (lat, long, etc )with some data base in your application. otherwise even in gps you get raw data only. gps maps are also not free downloadable. so take few information of some locations and put it in a look up table. and let the application do the mapping and show the area name

It is applicable for mobiles which don't have GPS facility rite? For those mobiles which have GPS facility we can track them with this inbuilt application. Can't we?

tracking place using GPS on a map is entirely different from displaying cell / tower information. Even moblie with GPS facility use at commands to know the tower information. GPS is not used for the purpose of knowing the place or location of the phone. it is a user guide to help user find out destination routes to different places.
Maybe i did not understand your question properly if this explanation does not answer your doubt.
I am keeping in loop the subject of thread, and my answers are with respect to main question of this thread.
But in general GPS is used for tracking the mobile, if it is lost, but not for cell info display.

If your question is something different from my answer, please let me know in some other way, so that i can understand you better.
