high-performance backup ac power

hi, I am doing a project in which it is intended to design a backup power unit suitable for maintaining power for a small motor. If line power is loss it switches to battery powered inverter within less than 0.1 sec. The inverter output must be fully synchrionised to the line, so that there is limited inrush current when the switching takes place.the unit should wait atleast 20sec., resynchronised and then switches back over to line power. the battery recharge process is managed as well. I would like to get ur help in designing the control circuit for switching operation from main line to battery. I am interested in using a PLC for controlling the process of waiting for 20sec before switching takes place and how to resyncronise after switching takes place. I am struggling, please help me ! please ![/b]

ups is the backup of acpower

Without going into details, my first thought is about the synchronization issue ..
Why couldn't you use a couple of solid state relays (optocoupler+zerocrossing+triac) and switch the other source just the next comming cycle later after the loss of power from the primary source?
In the wordt case scenariothe maximum loss of power would be 1/2 of cycle (0.01s), there is no power disturbance as the switching occurs at zero-crossing and no synchronization is required - that means that you can use an inverter(UPS) running in parallel and switch between these two power sources, the mains and the UPS, at any time ..

thanks for giving the suggestion for using zero crossing detector and opto coupler but i would really appriciate if u can help me up in some more idea on how to use these circuits and detailed overview about its operation. please
