LM317 boosting problem

I want to boost the current of LM317 or other regulator IC.
I have gone through data sheet of it and found the info over there
but not much useful for me
then i got other ckt digram too but it is using T0-3 type transistor

Can we have currents upto 4A using some BD series or TiP series To-220 type or such transisor

Re: LM317 boosting problem

TO-220 transistors are as good as transistors in TO-3 package ..
Quite often you can find the same transistors available in both packages, for example, 2N3055 (TO-3) and MJE3055 (TO-220) ..

Also you can use TIPs and BDs ..
For example:
TIP120
BD243 ..
and a good practice is to use more than one, all connected in parallel with small (0.1Ω) equalizing emitter resistors ..

In linear applications just keep in mind heat generation and equipe a power transistor with sufficient heatsink ..

Thanks for your response Sir.
I am satisfied with your answers
Which diodes should be used for such rectifiers
I have 1N4007 but I think It won't handle >3A.
Which is next most widely available.
Rectifier diodes and diode bridges

LM317 boosting problem

Just check out the MUR series of rectifier diodes.

MUR860 is an 8A device

Re: LM317 boosting problem

The next step up is the 1N540X series - 3A current .. see picture below ..
If you need more current you have to go for a bridge and if you intent to draw that current continuosly fit it with a small heatsink ..

1N540x is widely used and it is easily available here.
thanks for pointing out that.

and u are talking about diode bridges like MDA series.
