What is 3 phrase line?

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum!
and i have one Small and silly doubt....:-D
What is 3phrase? and difference between 1phrase and 3 phrase ?
where it being used and its advantages and disadvantages over 1 phrase?

1st , it is not '1phrase' and '3phrase'. it is '1phase' (single phase) and '3phase'

a single phase line is ac line with sinusoidal voltage between two lines(called as:phase and neutral)

a 3phase line will have three sinusoidal voltages of same magnitude with differing phase.
in 3 phase , the lines are referred as:R, G and B lines.
if you take R line and its voltage is taken as reference (0 degrees),
the G line lags behind by 120degrees.
and B line by 240 degrees with respect to R line.
or , each line a phase shift of 120 degrees.

with 3 phase , you can transmit more power for given sizes.

Thanks for explaining it...that phase one was spelling mistake and i used one as short cut any ways thanks for guiding me:smile:
i understood the concept,can you tell where 3 phase is actually used?
 

3 phase systems are used for big motors for examples, for industrial appliances, which need huge amount of power, with 3 phase system you are talking about 380 volts with. no 3 phase lines are used with home appliances .
 

In industry, also small motors (e.g. a 370W induction motor) are regularly using three-phase supply, due to higher efficiciency.

A three-phase power distribution system is saving transformer iron and cable copper weight. At least in Western Europe, most residential areas have three-phase power distribution, and most homes three-phase meter and switch board. Higher power appliances, e.g. an electric cooker or electric water heaters have three-phase supply.

Really it is "G" ?? All these years I knew 3Phase systems are refered only as Red, "Y"ellow, Blue.
Does it varies across countries? i did'nt know

yours correct it is R(red), Y(yellow) and B(blue)....
my thought is it is universal colour code for 3 phase line

During power cuts in towns i use to hear lot about these phase topic do everyone will be allotted the same phase or each street will be allotted various phases how is this different from above
 

Not necessary that all the houses in a street will have to given a single phase. They divide it between the three phases to balance the load.
So if a particular phase fails, all the houses which tapped power from that phase will be in dark. So just because your neighbour has electricity, and you does'nt have, that does not mean that it is a problem at your house. It is just that the neihbour must be connected to a different phase which has not failed.
