Why is Masking on PCB required ?

    Hi all ,

I am routing FG at the Boundaries of my Power supply PCB to protect against ESD .

Now all i require to know where to do Masking and where not to .

    Please Guide !!

    Regards !!

Do you mean solder masking ?.. if yes i think solder masking is done everywhere on the PCB where there are no drill holes and places where soldering is not required. its required to protect the PCB from environmental effects.

Re: Why is Masking on PCB required ?

    I mean Green Masking....
Actually i was going through some Power supply where they had done green masking from one side and no masking from the other side

Dont know the Reason and not finding any convincing answer about the same .

    Regards !!

Re: Why is Masking on PCB required ?

Like boiler answered, the reason is to protect board against corrosion on cuper layer.

What kind of board you refer ?
    ( double sided ? fiber ? )

Re: Why is Masking on PCB required ?

    sole purpose of Masking is
    a. Protect tracks from environmental effects suc as corrosion
    b. avoid between two electrical components during soldering, testing.
    c. Protects PCB material from environmental effects.

I hope, it may clear your point.

Its double sided & i think the purpose of Routing FG/EARTH is for ESD Protection and without Masking the trace protection against ESD is more .

Correct me if i am Wrong .

Re: Why is Masking on PCB required ?

Remember that ESD donīt is affected to varnish used on PCB.
Electromagnetic fields have different behaviour than galvanic fields.

If there are traks and/or plain at both sides, I donīt see any reason to donīt cover that layer.
We said only reasons to use the mask, but didnīt see advantages to donīt use.

Unless if represents cost or time to produce, but donīt think that.

Solder mask is to stop the solder spreading during solder, and to avoid solder bridges etc etc. Hence the name solder mask:)

Oh and if you wanna proect a PCB you have to use CONFORMAL COATINGS, you cannot rely on Solder Mask.
