Good Evening

I am a total noob to electronics design, though I am an instrumentation technician by trade, so if I am in the wrong area please direct me to the correct area to post my thread.

I have been playing with http://www.proview.se/ for a little while and I would like to design/build an eight channel digital input card that works via profibus.
Why you ask? for the fun of learning, and most importantly to automate my home brew system.

Reading through these forums I feel that this is a simple thing for a lot of you guys, so I ask for some help.

does anyone know a good link for me to start learning the basics?

From some reading of the web I believe that I need to break my project down to a couple of sub-projects.

Field wiring and protection
This is my field wiring connection point and some sort of protection to stop spikes from killing my electronics board.

Field Wiring to Electronics & Combine all inputs
This is something like an optio-coupler and a way to may eight individual signals into an 8-bit word.

Get 8-buit word onto profibus network
This is getting the 8-bit word onto the profibus network. I assume this will take somesort of programming on a special chip and then transfer it to a communications type chip for communications via the network cable to my computer.

Does this sound about correct or am i missing some steps here.

Any assistance, suggestions and direction on where to go from here is greatly appreciated.

cheers
