LED and PN junction diode

what is the difference between LED and PN junction diode.
 

there is no differance electricaly

all diodes will light up if you reverse bias them

its just what band they emit on
and led's are built to emit on specific wavelengh

using techniques like tunnel or layer etc...

best you study led's datasheets and info ... rather than ask daft questions

even a transistor will emit and respond to light of different frequencies

this is why they are bound in tins and plastic packs...
 

oh ye

most diodes respond when reverse bias and emit when foward bias...

LEDs are made in direct-bandgap materials where recombination
results in a photon emission. They are PN diodes still.

Silicon PN diodes will emit light. I saw this on my first power
MOSFET driver when I used the wrong type of diode in the
high voltage clamp. Immediately followed by said diodes
launching out of their insulating tubs and bouncing off my
face as I peered through the probe station microscope.
The diode was reverse biased and breaking down. The light
may have been incandescent.
