they are not as cheap as Microchip but the development kits are amazingly cheap
But I read somewhere that the cheapest chip is sub $1 in 10K

I had the same problem ,IAR reported this text when I tried to flash the device
I managed to find the file Patch64_256.zip on their website earlier but I can't find the link again.

The ez-kit is a relay nice piece of hardware
I used that in the beginning for my project, later to be replaced by my own hardware
The way I work with it is that I flash all my code in to the flash and at boot up time my code gets copied over to the SDRAM
this is all well documented in the kit...

The only thing that makes the FTDI and Cygnal chips interesting is the fact that they allow you to use their VID and gives you your own PID

but all of you miss the most important part CHEAP
I'm looking at a project that I want to sell at a very low price sub $20
then $10.19 a chip like the Philips chip is way to high
also the microchip and the FTDI they are both nice...
